Personally the headstock bearings just need to be tightened. The amount of labour you'll be paying for them to do the job will be quite high.

Just get in there with a screwdriver and tighten the puppies up.
It's not like there ever going to explode, and your going to lose all steering. They will become noisey, and grindey before that happens.

ive very recently replaced the original headstock bearings with tapered roller bearings, and the difference is amazing. the previous bearings had a very obvious notch in the very middle. with the new bearings the bike turns into corners so much easier as there is no more notchness. i'd say its made more of an improvement than my new hagon fork springs!

The head stock bearings really arn't a bad job you dont have to remove any body work at least I didnt I own an nc 23 get a manual from the internet and take your time replace with nice roller bearings and it will feel like a new bike. the only tricky bit I found was removing the lower bearing seat.

no knocking before hand. i had no idea there was anything wrong with them until i took the fork legs out for new seals and bushes. it really has transformed the bike though!

I had the same noise on my crm 250 now I know its a totally different bike and style of forks. But it was the linkage in the left fork leg that had come loose and created some play when the forks were compressed it might still be head bearings but thats what happend to me.
