An 87 would be a genesis (twin headlights with no air intakes) I think they have 38mm dia forks.
Now it gets tricky, I think you might have fork that take a 100mm caliper bolt spacing - measure this and confirm it before you get calipers. Here's a tip, don't try to measure centre to centre measure from the bottom or top of the hole to the corresponding part of the other hole.
If you get 100mm then be happy cos a Yamaha Blue spot (or gold spot) will bolt straight on !!!
Now check the brake discs are the right size, later bikes used a 298mm dia
opps - you can use the R6 / R1 calipers they come in two types some have slightly smaller dia pistons I think it's 34 / 38mm these are probably better for a 400. Blue spot calipers are standard issue on just about all modern Yamahas

are the discs you have totally flat or do they have an offset? i think the genesis used 'flat' discs (might be wrong though!) so the offset may be wrong when you fit the calipers. I've got a set of flat discs somewhere if you end up needing them.

A painter's useful to know - where abouts are you ?
The discs won't be R6 beause the R6 wheel is different
