Went for a spin today just a small one. Went about 30 or so miles stopped for a chat bike started ok but my mates were complaining that my brake lights & indicaters we very dim. Didn't think anything. Started off again went for about 10 or so miles, stoped at a junction and I staled the bike then it would not start just a clicking nose. Rolled down the hill & it bump started strait away got home put the bike in the gararge & it still as if the battery is flat. I just hope its just the battery as its been standing for about 3 weeks I should of put it on the charger while it was standing

i would say classic reg/rec problems.. or possible alternator issue if the reg/rec proves good.

How old is the battery? Charge the battery and then load test it by measuring the voltage while trying to start the bike with the kill switch on, only run the starter motor for 20 seconds. Battery voltage should not drop below 10 volts. A larger drop would suggest the battery has passed away. If battery ok, measure the battery voltage while engine is running, should be around 13-14 volts no matter what the electrical load provided rpm >5000.

It is recommended that batteries be trickle/float charged if left unused for extended periods, compensates for the internal discharge characteristic of lead/acid batteries.

One more question.
When out on the ride the bike ran fine even when bike cut out & bump started it went fine ,would this be the case if the geny was nackered.
But I will get my mate round to check it with his volt tester i'm not to clever when it comes to wires.

Could be alternator, rect/reg or battery, or any combination of the three. I would suggest you start by checking that the battery can hold a good charge, bad batteries can give the rect/reg a hard time because the rect/reg uses the battery as a reference voltage to control the charging process. Then check the alternator has a good output. If those two are ok it leaves the rect/reg as the most likely problem.

I checked the battery today & the readings are.

With the lights off is 13.42
With the lights on is 12.30
Any ideas ?
I must say when I went for the blast when the bike cut the battery was'nt fully charged.

Lights off 13.42 is ok but with lights on test what was engine rpm. You need to run 5000 rpm to test with lights on, alternator does not have enough ouput at lower engine speed to support the lights on load.

I forgot to say I was running at between 5000 to 5500 rpm.
