Track mods

I love modifying bikes, but I also love standard restored bikes. As such, when I bought a bike for spares and found it too good to break but too far away from being returned to the road, I got thinking about returning my old faithful NC30 to standard and doing a track bike to supplement.

This means I have single seat, technoflex shock, ebc rotors, braided hoses, half system and 17" rear ready for the project. The nc30 motor has low miles and looks good so that will stay, but will need a few mods and this is where help is needed.

I am thinking of doing the gsxr charging system mod, removing the quietening scissor gears, a little bit of head work etc. Are these all worthwhile mods?

Also, I am planning to keep an air filter on the bike but am unsure of the best carb setup. Do the NC3 carbs help with midrange or should I stick with the NC30 ones?

Thanks for any tips
Shane

Well if its just going to be a dedicated track bike and you don't have unlimimted funds to throw at it forget the gsxr charging kit, its a big expense for some you don't need, just remove the charging system period.

Nc35 carbs have better midrange annd some say fuel nicer but a trackbike will be living at 8k + most of the time so again not needed, the 30 carbs are bigger so in theroy should work better at high rpm which is where you want it.

Spend the money headwork and removing the quitening gears, pretty sure the head needs skimming if you remove them anyway, or something along those lines. Then you might aswell run the hrc setup or ram air for a bit more expense, you don't need a air filter for track bikes.

Have fun :)

What he said.

Total loss. Decent suspension and brakes.

17" rear and linkage for tyre choice, decent front brakes and fork springs, rear shock and fixed rearests instead of the springy standard ones.

My blown engine had been de-scissor geared. Did it spin up faster? Not sure. Did it idle like a bag of spanners? Oh yes....

I was thinking about keeping the charging system and running a daytime mot. As I wont be racing competitively the convienience of a starter swings it for me.

How much running could you get from a full charge on a healthy battery?

Mine had a starter motor and fuel pump and still lasted all 7 sessions with only an hour on the optimax at lunchtime. I'm not even sure it needed that tbh.

Thanks for the replies - I think I will go total loss for a start, just use a good lightweight battery. Getting excited about the idea of a nice light track bike

Another one for those in the know. I have 2 sets of forks, and early set and a later set with rebound adjustment. Although the earlier forks are needing new seals the stanchions are in very good condition. The later forks are not leaking but they have more pitting. I know both forks can be improved, but logic tells me to stick with the later ones. If the pitting is a problem I guess a rechrome can sort them. Would this be the best option?

Your logic serves you right ;)

Some more silly questions.

For track bikes do you remove the ignition key etc and just rely on the off switch on the bars? Its a bit more weight removed after all (That and a lock set seems to fetch good money on ebay lol)

Also, do you just make a little cover for where the speedo drive bolts onto the engine?

Will post some pictures soon

Thanks
