mine was nasty and whilst replacing it i noticed that the clutch basket faces where the friction plates sit were worn , so im told it can cause the plates to stick/catch?

Could be a worn clutch basket, remove the plates and inspect the fingers.. if they have ridges in them then this is your problem.
Also.. how olds the oil? Drop it and replace it with some 10/40 semi-synth is good.

You have kinda narrowed it down to what it could be.
My guess would be the basket it worn.
Look at my video on YouTube or in the workshop section and it goes through a bit on the clutch basket i think.
Forget now, been a while since i did it.
