Smokin' Battery then ka-putt!!!

Post by Mike Shelby »

Hi all - Had a crappy weekend -

Went out for a ride on Friday on my R1 with my 2 sons on their small bikes - R1 chain snapped so wife came out with a tow rope in the car and I got towed home by my sons Honda CBR125!!

Then today went on my FZR400RR for a ride with my lads again on there 50 and 125 bikes this afternoon. We stopped up near Cadwell and my FZR400RR 4DX stunk so bad? - thought my clutch was burning out. Anyway - weather looked crap so we turned around and headed back. Got closer to home and put my indicator on and they stayed on and didn't flash?
Made the turn at the junction and the bike just died!! My sons noticed smoke under my seat so we whipped it off to find the battery almost on fire and all melted. So my wife was phoned and she came out again with the tow rope and I got pulled home again by my lads CBR125!!

Anyway - what will have caused this problem . . . would it be the rectifier and if so does anyone have one I can buy please? Will a rectifier from another model FZR be compatible such as a 1wg etc?
Also gotta get another new battery again now as mine is completley fried.

Hope you all had a better weekend than mine! :(

Regards

Mike

My rectifier was sending 18v to my battery, I had one off a 95 fzr600r put that on and now its getting 14.4v.
I would check all connections from alternator to battery making sure theyre clean and tight and replace or borrow a rectifier

Probably is the reg rec. Fit the new battery and check the voltage with then engine running it should be then give the throttle a blip, the volts should stay at about 14.5.

You can fit a 3TJ reg rec, there's no need to fit anthing else (although the Foxeye or T'Cat will probably be the same part). As Marti says check all the connectors and have a look at the wires from the alternator to make sure they're not burnt.

Yep sounds like rectifier has gone but from my experience the damage to the battery was probably due to the rectifier was passing AC to the battery. My very brief spell with ducats had this happen on two occasions! if iras you I would remove rec and test the output from alternator (I'm sure that one of the manuals online will tell you how to do that. The last thing you want is to connect the rec and it blows as soon as you start! Then connect battery and measure across terminals as others have said.

Hope this helps even if my attempts to wipe ducats from my mind!

Many thanks guys -

have ordered a new battery and now looking for a reg/rectifier on ebay as I don't have a spare here I can try.

I noticed last night that both my dip beams were'nt working and thinking about it now the bike had that strange burning smell last night too - so I bet the voltage has blown my bulbs do you think?

I see there's some 'ultra white' H7 bulbs on ebay listed for the RR - might give them a go as I've always thought the lights aren't as bright as I'd like them.

I'll check the wiring tomorrow, and hope nothing else has gone into melt-down mode. The battery looks a right mess and it was a chuffin' new one back in May!

Good luck with it, you really need to check as many wires as you can, my dukes used to melt the connector at rec and then go on to melt the wires to the rec!

Can we have a link for the H7 bulbs ???

The 3TJ has Yamaha only bulbs which come in at about £18 each so if there is an H7 that fits I think we'll be interested

The bulb is a Koito MH6R - 0488

The cheapest I found was this on the bay
