Hi guys,
After nearly killing myself on my RGV250, I decided I needed something with a little more midrange!
But as I sold a VFR400 when I got the RGV, I wanted something a little different.
So, I picked up these two little bikes from ebay...
That 600 engine is going in to the 400 chassis, with a little help from fzrtim!
I'm sure that I'll have a list of parts and questions that I'll be bugging you all with...
Alex.

Just waiting for the 600 strip down!

Your well on your way, it makes it so much easier to have a full bike to take the parts from. I spent ages trying to source parts!

I think a donor bike is the way to go - at least the front end can be bolted to a 1WG, bodywork always sells, then you'll have a spare TJ engine and downpipes so the cost isn't so horendous in the long run

Hi I need some advice, What model 600 is it & can you just do a straight swap without cutting the frame? Also are you selling the 400 engine? Much thanks :D :D

You don't need to cut a 400 frame to fit a 600 engine into it.
The differences between the 400 and 600 essentially is the 600 has a longer stroke, the bottom end is the same. so all the tricky stuff like the front and rear sprokets lining up is done. The 600 engine is about 20mm taller than the 400 so you need the 600 downpipes to clear the sump.
Most of the ancillaries are the same too, you can run the 400's carbs if they have the same jetting as the 600 ... but secondhand carbs are cheap so I always recomend getting the 600's ones as it will be easier when you come to start the new engine up.
400 engines had a few incarnations - the original was in a steel frame and painted black. The there are 1WG genesis and exup these are mounted with frame rails to the front of the gearbox. The 3TJ has a smooth rounded look to the barrels and is mounted from the top. Most of these are echoed by the 600's with the later 600R (Foxeye) and ThunderCat looking like the 3TJ.

Spent the afternon in the garage today. The 600 is now engineless!
I offered up the engine just to see how it fits.
It fits quite well! Although I am a bit concerned about the left/right positioning of the engine. When Tim did his conversion, the plates spaced the correctly, but with just the two rear mounting bolts in place the engine is over to the left.
Left:-
Right:-
As you can see there is a gap on the right, but not on the left.
Is this OK? Will it all pull up straight when all bolts are in?
Alex.

It should be ok when everything is torqued up properly it could be that all the bolts are in from one side
