Hi guys.

Hello to all, I am new to this so pls hel me right if I do something wrong.

I bought a 92 honda vfr 400 nc30, when I bought the bike the owner said that the bike has been standing for a year and that it does not start, but just a good carb cleaning will do the job.

I have taken off the carbs and cleaned them properly, the bike started but with a lot of splatter and a backfire. I thought it was the carb insulators (rubbers that links the carb and the head) and replaced them. But still lots of splatter and backfiring, and when I open the throttle to quick it would die, then I noticed that one manufault was colder than the others so I did a sparkplug change on it.

now the bike doesnt want to start, itsounds like it wants to but doesnt, even if I feed it fuel straight into the carb,

any ideas? please help....

Welcome.

The good news is that you have a cool bike.

The bad news is that you've probably drowned the plugs as they do not like much throttle when starting nor do they like fuel direct into the carbs..

You'll have to take them out, dry them off on a gas stove and see if you can get it to start on full choke, no throttle.

It is a common thing..so don't beat yourself up about it..and if you have to buy some new plugs, you'll never drown them again!!

Where you at - might be someone local who might offer a hand

There are a few Saffas on here.. couple down the cape and another couple over Pretoria/Jo'burg

Plugs can be had from the UK ebay I am sure.

Are you down at sea level or up on the veldt? can make a big diference to your jetting. Anyways, clean them plugs, no throttle and come choke - you might get it to catch, try not to rev it at all..let it idle on the choke.

No worries.. It is a common problem - flooded plugs and they die...simple as that.

Just dry them out. Aslong as the plug is sweet.

They can sometimes be recovered but the usual fix, for tens/hundreds of threads like this, is to fit new plugs!

Due to the small size they do seem to be very fragile!

I have a really stupid question,

When I got the bike the battery was flat, and would not charge, so in waiting for honda to get me a 12v 6am battery I tried using an alarm sysytem battery, it is 12v but 8am, could that mak the bike not wanting to start?
