Hey guys,

I'm currently in the process of restoring my RVF400 after an accident, it's starting at the moment, but it won't sit idling unless it's on full choke. I had it on for about 5 minutes and even then it would turn off when I took the choke off. I've also noticed that it's jumping around the revs, up about 200 or so then down again and up and down... Not entirely sure what the problem is. I adjusted the idle up from about 1500 to 2k then up again to 2.5 and still got the same thing.

Also noticed that when I pulled the throttle quickly it would stutter around 5k for a second then go up, but opening it smoothly it worked fine, pretty sure that's normal though.

The exhaust is also blowing a small amount of white smoke, though this might just be from it sitting for about 2 months.

Any ideas?

I reckon the first thing you need to do is pull the carbies apart and give them a good clean (each and every jet should be removed and have compressed air blown through) and check the float heights. Check out Cammo's carbie guide, a brilliant post detailing all aspects of setting up the NC30 carbies (the NC35 has a couple of differences, I think described in the guide, but it'll help set your carbies up pretty close to perfect).

Once you've done that and ensured the carby rubbers are sealing properly (air leaks can cause revs to muck around) you should make sure they are balanced. There's plenty of knowledgable people of here so don't hesitate to ask...good luck.

That might be my job for tomorrow then I think... I was going to do it anyway, but I guess now is as good a time as ever!

It works! Played around with the carbs (which were quite easy to get back on by the way... took me about 2 minutes!) and it's now idling fine, sitting on about 500rpm with no choke, might adjust that up just a smidge and it's good to go!

1300 is correct idle speed

I guess that's something to do tomorrow then, cheers mate
