It runs......well kinnda!

Well finally made it to the point where fuel could be added to the bike after rebuilding everything!!

Went to start it with the kill switch on, turned it over till the oil light went out. Then tried it on run, turned over but didnt want to fire, then could smell petrol, turns out it was pissing out the holes on the bottom of the carbs as had failed to do the screws up. So carbs off, and tightened them up and tried again. Still nothing so left it for a while as figured it was prob flooded. After 5 mins or so had another go this time it fired up with choke on full and idled nicely.

Got a fair bit of smoke out of the headers and the cans but that died down after a while and it ran pretty well considering ive not balanced the carbs fully (done drill bit method but not used a gauge yet.)

Now heres where im confused if I take the choke off it dies, touch the throttle and it dies. Didnt do it initally as I blipped the throttle a few times just out of excitment and it was fine but now touch it and it the revs drop and it cuts out.

Whats the score? I feel so close now to sucess with the project. but something aint right.

Try turning the pilots out 1/2 a turn to richen. Also try increasing the idle when cold for a more stable idle.

Will give that a try its got 120/118 jets in it, it is restricted though but that should effect it.

Yes, it won't like it.... you've a lot less air going in and so you need smaller jets

Theres a simple solution to that I guess! Will have to get the carbs off.

Only think is it was doing it when I bought it and that was before the restrictors were fitted.

Then somethings not right.

Float heights ok?

Pilot screws complete and screwed out enough and all passageways clears?

Sounds like a carb problem

Did check the float heights although my verniers aren't the best, how accurate do they have to be? As they were all wittin 0.5mm of 6.5mm.

Will have to strip them down and have a closer look.

as long as there in the ball park mate should be fine, float adjustment spec is really only a base guide line for thier hight.

How far out should the pilots be screwed? Will get the carbs off tomorrow and check them over.

Right dont laugh but just realised what Ive done, Id unscrewed the drain screws by 2.25 turns rather than the pilot adjuster screws. Which Id missed completely would explain why there was petrol pissing out! lol

Checked them and 3 of them were half a turn too tight the 4th is seized tight and the head is rounded so someone had a go at it before. Any ideas not keen on getting the blow torch out as despite having drained them the carbs are bound to go up in smoke.
