1988 EXUP FZR400 FORKS

Hello,
My FZR400 is 1988 EXUP 1WG-045x frame, so 3EN1 i believe. It has 38mm stanchion and gold 4 pot calipers (not 2 pot!) Its defintely an import no miles only kms.
I was wondering what oil one can use? Manual says 10W has anybody tried 15W weight?

JUST changed mine from whatever was in there (Presuming 10w) to 15w. Unfortunately im in the middle of doing a few other things to my bike right now; so ive not been able to try it out as yet.But,the definative garage 'bounce test' makes it feel 100% better and nowhere near as soft and spongy as they were,and are from standard.....

Certainly a common mod,and whilst it may not 'transform' your front end,im pretty sure the improvements are well worth it for £10 worth of oil and not alot of time.

Thanks for the reply. Are you sure about the stock springs? I may try get some aftermaket springs which are harder and close to my weight but again the problem I see is that would it be enough rebound? Usually maxton modifies this issue 98 out of 100 stock forks. Thats why i said 15W oil, its the cheap solution, then if the sag its not right we cannt change springs too. Btw any idea who sells springs for the FZR400 at a *reasonable* price?

Hagon list fork springs for £89 including new oil. I think that's reasonable.

I think they're the same forks as the FZR600 3HE ... you could look for a pair of those and use the larger 298 mm discs with your 400 wheel.

I know very well the FZR600 as i have race it. The forks dont have enough rebound. If you put stiffer springs (used to sell ohlins) there is no rebound damping. You would have to sent them to maxton enginnering or a similar place to change the dumpers. So I am no sure if the FZR600 is the solution.

Kayla just told me on ebay that FZR1000RU is not fitting as is 340mm long while the stock FZR400 is 300mm.
I am wondering if a 3TJ fits (i.e. 3TJ shock length is 300mm as well).
There is the 5SL R6 which is fitted with a shock with vertical reservoir, and i was recon would fit but again Kayla told me it wont. So... I guess either I have to get one and modify the arm (as we do for early R1s to fit underseat exhausts) OR would look for a 300mm shock from an CBR/ZXR and see if that can fit.

Damn I though it would fit.
Plently of R6s shocks out there for few pounds I may take one and see if I can machine a bit the bracing of the arm.
I found springs online on webmoto for 66 GBP deliverd. However springs are/would be necessary if the sag cannt be set. The fork oil however 15W means primarily more damping. I havent race the FZR400 but on the 600 it was a big issue and since it looks to me their forks are similar I would guess the 400 has the same issue.
So I think I would go with the 15W as buying/remachining dumpers for this 400 its not worth it. I would convert to ohlins fronts if I was too fuzzy. A friend took the whole front end of an R1 with FG43's and fit it to an FZR400 doing some machining, needless to say the foks itselfs are 3 time worth the rest of the bike...

OK for info I just measured my rear ohlins on the R1, its out as the bike is in pieces it is exactly 300mm from hole to hole!
I guess may try an R1 shock with a softer spring? Kayla what you recon? Ever tried that? Does if fits?
