SLIPPY CLUTCH

Clutch starting to slip on SP, not surprised, just passed 8yrs of ownership which is hard to believe! so lucky with this bike honestly 40K on the clock, so no spring chicken.

Had noticed it a while ago, slight slip when you give it the beans!, happened again, Sunday, bike was quite hot into about a hour and half ride, beans to pass about four cars, and just a handful of revs, no go!

Havnt changed a clutch on a bike before! cable is fully adjusted, slight play on lever. so its not due to cable being too tight. Clutch feels weak, and has been for a while,

What am I getting myself into, does a kit include friction plates, and springs? where do you purchase?
would and 3tJ SP and 3tj clutch be the same?

quite confident to change this myself, anything to be warned about before I tackle this?

It's not difficult to change it.
But first have you adjusted the worm gear on the sproket cover ??? You take off the rubber bung, and there's a screw + locknut. I use a socket and put a screwdriver throughit. Slacken the lock nut and do up the screw untill it just touches home then unscrew it a small amount, now hold the screwdriver there and do up the socket and nut.

If it's still not good then you'll need, the cluch friction plates, clutch cover gasket, spring set, oil change. It's a straight forward unbolt swap bolt up job. You need to soak the new plates in oil for 24 hrs (soak them in the clutch cover ) the steel plates need to go back in the same order so leave them on until your ready to to swap them.
You don't have to change the oil but it's best to.

After it's done adjust the screw and locknut as above and then set the cable adjustment.

I had exactly the same problem, even after changing the springs and friction plates it was still slipping. Turned out the fine adjustment screw on the sprocket cover just needed a tweak.

If you do change the plates the steels have a mark on them which need to be fitted 120 degrees round from the previous marking and if the clutch cover has never been taken off before it is very likely that the gasket will break when you take it off, wemoto sell them pretty cheaply.

Thanks for the info, will try adjustment first, hopefully it will just need adjustment, will wemoto do clutch kits aswell, as gasket. or where is the best place to get a clutch? No point in ordering local as they just add more bucks to it! so will end up ordering from UK , is the SP clutch different to standard 3TJ?
may aswell change clutch cable while Im at it, if clutch is needed its adjusted out fully at lever> thaks for the replys guys.

It's better to get the Yamaha OE plates and the SP has an extra one.

I'm sure there's lots more to learn but most of the questions come round again and again so all you really need is a reasonable memory for this stuff.

worked a tread lad! Thanks, heres a few photos, NW coast, famous bike pic road, THE DARK HEDGES, Dunlop country, Ballymoney. oak trees, intertwine for about 8-900 yards, nice summer evening.
read somewhere someone was over a Ulster GP and Mid antrim, anyone else coming over, check out this road.
From Carrickfergus, to Bushmills. Think it was made for a 400 its called the coast road, takes about 1hr, 50+ miles of twists





If summer was like this for atleast 6 months, I wouldnt mind the other 6 months



Great spin out, blew away all the cobwebs, anyone else feel a bike goes better, faster, harder after a good spin.
Bike ran faultless! no probs, but after ten years on 400's think its time to move on.
Still want to stay sportsbike, R6? any suggestions, carb 2001 or injection model 2001+
I will keep one RRSP, and fully restore it, they are gettin on a bit 20 yrs!!! Classic bike
