Hi
my battery is recieving 16v when running
is this too much?
Also bike starts ok runs ok till about 11k then holds back
I removed all bodywork and checked every connection and replaced a
dodgy one.
Ran bike again. Noticed hi rev missfire
complete with flame out of tailpipe.
Obviously unburnt fuel
noticed no3 exhaust pipe colder than rest.
Anyone else had similar probs?
The bike is taxed and tested and only done
27000kms
thanks

16v is a bit high, it should be at about 14.5v it could be the reg rec is a bit duff.

Have you changed the sparkplugs recently ??? That would be first thing to do, if you can get a hoover then give the cavities a clean up first to stop any crap going into the plug holes. Fit the plugs but don't over tighten them.
If that doesn't work then look at the HT cable and plug cap, make sure the cap is tight onto the cable, they screw on, if it just turns round and round take the cap off and cut back about 1cm of cable then screw the cap back on.

Try this and report back

Thanks for that evil
ive ordered new plugs and was thinking
of doing a compression test at the same time.
But i would not have a clue where to get one to fit tho.
While im there i may as well do the valve clearances.
Last time i did this was on a 3tj racebike a few years ago and we took the engine out.
Is this still the best way?
Cheers marti

Sorry - i didn't ralise you had expeience ...

You can do it with the engine in the most difficult thing is getting the cam cover off. Dropping the engine will give you lots of room to work as long as you stand the engine and keep it still it might be easier in the long run.

i did my clearances with the engine in without any trouble, it's a bit of a fiddle getting the cam cover of but more so getting it back on with out moving the rubber gasket out of place, but is still easily doable and a lot easier than dropping the engine,
mine was running pretty rough before and although better once the clearances were done it was still pretty rough so i had the carbs balanced and it was like a new bike,
these bike are very fussy about how the carbs are setup so a bit of balancing after the clearances are done will defenatly help and certainly wont hurt

and as evil says 16V is a bit high so check the reg/rec as well just to make sure that's not part of the problem, it changes the voltage from AC to DC as well as regulating the voltage to a reasonable constant at about 14.5 at (if i remember correctly) 3.5K rpm but it's in the manual top of the fzr general section

Thanks for that
some good ideas there too
just wondered if i can swap leads over on 2 and 3 to
check leads etc or does that cock up the firing order?
Thanks

you can change the leads over completely (from coil and plug), but not just swap number 3 for number 4 at the plug end or it will, as you say, cock up the firing order ;)

first off make sure the reserve switch is in the fuel on position (not on reserve) and then ride it nearly dry as the fuel sender works when their is only about 2 ltr of fuel left
the easiest way to test it is to open the tank shine a torch in there and if the barrel on the fuel sender is above the level of fuel and if you haven't had the engine spluttery thing happen, then it aint working
the connector is green and lives under the R/H side of the tank

on the light's front i'm still not 100% certain as it's still a work in progress but it looks like a winner, iv'e only done the one lamp as yet, as soon as i have 2 mins to rub together I'll sort the other and post the results

Update
changed plug on suspect cylinder, swapped plug leads over
1 came away from coil.
So i replaced it-ok!
Went through wiring again as im still getting 16v
from the regulator.
Put the lights on and its a constant 13.8v!
So sod it ill just ride it with em on!
