vfr 400z

Does anyone on the forum own a vfr400z? need to compare notes on a few things as I've just bought a really clean low mileage 2 owners (1 jap,1 english) ,engine is really sweet,rear shock as new,brilliant condition (can you tell I'm happy)

Congratulations.Is it your first VFR400?I am sure it will be a lovely bike to ride.I have the VFR400K myself

I got a steal on e-bay recently of a 86 400z,with vaypor clocks,evo can, new battlaxes really low milege (3600) from new. It had sat unloved in the back of an importers for 13 years.Rides great apart from top end (no clocks so should be deristricted) it tops out at around 110 (but with no fairing who wants more speed) is there any other restrictions on this model? It pulls really strong and accelerates superb, so I'm thinking sprocket change has been done for better accelaration. I'm made up with this forum as I've always had " greys " but only two strokes before and would have saved myself a whole load of grief if forums existed when I had my nsr mc18rk5 !!!
Also I want to put a single seat on the vfr, would an nc24 seat bolt straight on the rear subframe?
P.s. I love the sound of the engine, now I understand what nc30 owners have always gone on about, the whirring of the v4 sounds cool

The NC30 is much better bike to own in terms of overal package, the engine (sounds so different as it fires 360 degress as opposed to the 180 engine of the NC2x, much like the crossplane cranks on the newer bikes)

Also brakes / suspension and tyre choice but we'll not go into that for now.

The NC2x '1st generation' still do have a cracking motor at the base and they make a great cheap run-around.

I particularly like the Z as it's naked.

The NC24 seats bolt straight on. You'll need the front and rear NC24 seats (there separate) also the rear piece of plastic above the brake light is seperate on the NC21 (you can remove this) however, it is part of the NC24 rear seat so you might need to paint this when you get it as they dont have teh same color scheme.

Incidentally they wern't restricted, they were made before that law existed, just a 'speed' warning light to come on over 80km/h if you had a speedo still fitted, your speed light is there but it's not a restriction, just an indicator.

Check the front and rear sprockets, 15/45 is standard gearing. The original clock will show close to 130'ish with a bit of wind.. if your running standard sprockets the new speedo might be more accurate.

If your overly concerned with the extra 10-15mph i'd check the jetting and have it dyno'd see where you stand in terms of power... originally they made 59ps :)

Thanks for the advice,I'm made up with it to be honest as a commuter and fun bike (I can live with the 130 rear tyre) and 80's handling as I was brought up on lc350's and have only just 'turned to the darkside' with four strokes.
I paid less than £500 for it off e-bay as people thought it had been crashed (no fairing nc21 front wheel) but I remember seeing a 400z in the flesh about 15 years ago at West Coast (remember them?) and loved the look way back then. I actually am having real fun on b roads with this as in real riding terms its way fast enough with surprising amouts of torque, totally converted to 400cc now. :grin:

It looks a clean and tidy bike in your pictures.Plain gloss black was never an original colour option though and the front wheel started life on an NC24 rather than an NC21.If it was mine I would be looking for some sort of screen or nose cone but it may well be awkward trying to get one to fit on twin headlamps though the Triumph Speed Triple manages it.If you want it to be more comfortable I would consider VFR400K footrests and perhaps slightly higher bars.The seat it has on it is more comfortable than the NC24 one partly because there is more room when you sit further back.I hope you enjoy it because it is a lovely fun bike to ride
