Just rebuiilt my front brake calipers,

I have normally just put copperslip on the sliding pins,but having a chat with a guy at work,he say thats a no -no
and should use a non petroleum based grease, as not to affect the sealing rubbers,preferably a silicone based one, err well what one do you use, dunno he replied its a long time since I done anything like that...grrreat

Any recomendations anyone? as I bet its only available to buy on the web and not at halfords or such like

I use red-rubber grease for caliper seals and slides. 1 tub will last you forever. When i lived in the UK, the MG club was one of the best places to buy it and it only costs about a fiver a tub

i use red rubber shit from halfrauds bikehut its got some teflon shit in there for a 5er a tube its pretty good stuff

Red rubber grease can be tricky to find locally. You'll get di-electric grease though (e.g. maplins), same basic stuff (silicon grease) but without the red dye.

Copper grease is the WORST thing you can put on pins!

It's an anti-sieze compound not a lubricant, it's also abrisve.. this wears out the pins fast.

I wrote up a guide here on overhauling brake calipers for the NC24.

I always change the rubber boots of teh sliding calipers if there even slightly worn as if they dont seal 100% water gets in them and it makes them go crap quickly.

Red Rubber grease is for piston seals and pistons (slight smear)

Proper slider grease is orange in colour.

THIS is the stuff you want.. 8 tubes for 99p.. BARGAIN, they'll last a lot longer than you'll live for and at that price it's insane notto buy :-)

Funnily enough I did follow the jackson lair page when I rebuilt them, but as there was no final bit on lubing the pins, I just just thought I will do it as I would have always done it, although I was tempted to use the white ptfe grease that I have, but thanks for the link to the proper stuff, as the weather has been pretty shite up here and will remain so for probably a good week, I might as well wait until it arrives in the post, albeit I will miss the 10 day mot return period, never mind

i wouldnt say its necessary on bike tbh,

cars with abs as its useing more force to stop more weight,

only squeaky brakes ive had were on my old 88 Yamaha DT and my 1966 BSA druims brakes but its part if its character

the only pin i recal seeing on my front caliper was the pad retaining pin.

copper grease the backs of pads , may aswel while there out , sqweeky brakes drive me mad lol
