I took the plastic caps off my handlebars the other day and noticed that one was hollow, and other was solid.

Are they meant to be like that?

No - std ones are fucking heavy bits of scaffold. Some aftermarket ones (like Rick Oliver's) are solid, then some others are hollow.

Light alloy bars with no end caps on them FORTHE WIN!! (get some Rick bars, cheap and light)
