REG/REC Cooling

I saw a mod on this forum recently where someone built a little tray to hold the reg/rec in the toolbox area with vents to the rear of the bike. As my reg/rec seems to be playing up (revs dip when I engage high beams and a few other little problems) I'm going to eventually get an R6 replacement unit - but obviously they're a bit bigger and apparently it'll crack the rear tail fairing.
I've never fabricated anything but want to have a go at a nice solution to this. My first idea is - the reg/rec clamps on to a sheet of metal on the subframe - would it be effective to use a CPU fan on the back of this sheet of metal to cool it down - or would that not be enough to make a difference?
The other thread had the fins of the new reg/rec filled with silicon then a heat sink on top of that with a CPU fan on top, it looked nice but was a little large in the underseat area which I use to store my disc lock and a couple of tools - I imagine with enough throwing around it'd damage the unit though.

Hi,
In my opinion, a cpu cooler does not produce sufficient air for the reg/rec to be cooled down (That is, if the cooler comes from an old pentium processor) . On the other hand, newer coolers may do the trick. You have to look for coolers that their cfm is high. The higher the better. Keep in mind though, that as the cfm rise so does the amps that the fan needs to run full speed.
From what i have seen up to know, the reg/rec produces a lot of heat. For my mod i bought this fan.....this fan is meant to go to server cases, not heat sinks.
It's an 80cm x 80cm x 38cm (80cm is just the size of a R6 reg rec), yes 38cm is large, but, under the rear seat....there is a lot of room for this kind of mod!! There are two things that i can't tell you. 1st: What i did is on a nc35. I don't know if there is the same amount of space on a nc30. 2nd: I also cant tell you, if after the mod, there will be enough space for tools and lock (my mod is not finished yet). I don't carry these with me (They make a lot of noise and they damage stuff around them.

I'm assuming you meant 80mm haha

Although the thought of you riding around with an 80cm fan on your back for the reg/rec is extremely amusing.
Hmm, I need to find out from someone what kind of fan I can run without draining too much juice - anyone got any idea how much power you could draw without causing a problem? I was going to simply earth to frame and take a live that leads to the indicator relay or similar.

Voltage x Current = Power (Watts)
12V x 0.87A = 13W MAX load.
the fan picture above would be fine to run on the NC30 Dan, just wire it from the start solenoid, so that its only on when the ignition is one, also fuse the wire close to the solenoid as posible and use a 5amp MAX! you only need 1Amp, but the cable will be more than suitable to support 5amperes.

also the wattage is more likely to be
10.4W
for got the cos theta into the equasion, i hate Trig/Algebra havent done it since i qualified about 7yrs ago.
P = Vp×Ip×cos φ

this will also be usefull for any future calcs, i dont need this as i can work them out on a standard calc but this will work it out for you.

Cheers for the help, I'll be sure to run an inline fuse! Now I need to decide whether to mount a fan behind the sheet of metal on the subframe or whether to go drastic and relocate the entire thing...

if you have the need to fit a fan you really are masking a problem, change the reg/rec it may be costly over that of a fan but if the reg go it could fry your genny and battery which will cost lots more, as youll need a gasket and new oil and filter per say.
heat transfer compound/grease behind the reg/rec onto the subframe will move a little more heat, also consider a cheap reg/rec upgrade of that of a CBR 125R only cost about £12 on ebay as a rule.

I'm swapping the reg/rec but I wanted to do a heat mod too - also do CBR125's fit? If so then why do people hand over 50-60 notes for an R6 one?
