Clicking discs

I have have tried to find and eliminate a strange clicking nosie from the front of my NC29.

If the front brake is applied and the bike is stationary and the forks are pushed down there is a click from the front end.

After much head scratching ( rebuilt headstock - forks - brakes ) I have found that the front discs are moving radially ( as in the direction of the wheel ) about 1/2 mm, the carrier stays still and the disc can be seen moving only slighty when the front wheel is locked on with the brake.

The bobbins on the discs seem to be tight, but you can twist them around using a screwdriver but not by finger.

Is this right - the bike has not had an MOT for 2 years so was hoping to take it next week.

Dont want to splash out on a new set of disc, as well as everything else.

I have only tried one side of the wheel as I removed the left caliper to try and find out which side was causing the problem - it may be both but Im finished tinkering for the night.

It's not a big deal. Just keep an eye on it.
On my T595 you could get a really big amount of radial play on the discs, it went through the MOT fine though.

This is not uncommon, like amorti says just keep an eye on it. I had a pair that were so bad they would rattle when riding over bumps :-o soon replaced them.

Yours will likely get worse, although that could take a while as yours only have a small amount of play - if they do get excessive you will want to replace them. If the rotors have plenty of life you may be able to drill out and replace the bobbins, although they may need some kind of packing to completely eliminate any play.

Wont have any trouble with the MOT.

Loose bobbins can in some situations hide slight disc warping, eg they allow for the braking areas to move radially through the pads and covers up slight warpage.

You can always get the bobbins tightened if it annoys you (beat them with a hammer!), when Ive had high end discs in the past they recommend some bobbin free play however.

Dont get too hung up on it, as long as the wheel spins freely and the brakes operate correctly you will soon forget about it.

Mine has developed the same problem , as above I'm just gonna keep an eye on it for now but it's nothing to worry about .

I just dont want it to fail the MOT.

I can not afford to throw anymore cash at it for another few months.

The insurance, tax and mot are going to set me back £200 so any more work will cause mayhem with the missus.

If it fails the MOT it wont be for that. Dont worry, you will be on the road in no time!

IT FAILED.

1) Loose tank - forget to tighten up front bolt - doh!

2) Oil on front discs and pads - I think from all the times I have had them off and on again ( 20+ ). Plus bleeding the brakes several times.

Cautionary on : -
Front wheel bearings a little rough.
Both dust caps missing?
Radiator not secured - bottom braket is held on with cable tie?? Bolt has snapped off.

So have :-

Tightened bolt on tank.

Removed calipers - took out pads - cleaned pads and discs with brake cleaner. Put back together.


I expected it to fail to be honest, it could have been a lot worse. So Im happy.

Back on monday for retest.
