just unearthed my top yoke which i had powder coated early last year, only to find i had left the masking tape on the inside of the fork holes and ignition barrel hole Numpty, I know! so as you can imagine it's pretty baked on. I've started to pick it of, and it's coming slowly, but it's leaving a horrible sticky residue, so i was wondering has anybody got any suggestions on how to get the sticky residue off, before i attack it with sand paper and ruin my top yoke in anger

Wd40 is pretty good for getting sticky shit off.

I'd certainly try a bit of WD40 on the residue first, then if you're still left with some a bit of 400 or 600 wet and dry should sort it, plud will make the holes ever so slightly bigger, which could help in fitting it (recently found my top yoke gets stuck easily, and needs a hammer tap to get it off)

Thinners??? personally id whip round with a dremal fixed with one of those sandpaper attachments, your not going to damage anything.

Bad advice.

You don't want to open out the holes, they are precision engineered. Someone has done that in my nc29 back wheel and I've had to glue the bearing in. If the top yoke gets stuck it usually means your forks are bent or out of line within the bottom yoke.

You need patience, nothing more abrasive than scotchbrite, and WD40. You might find if it's anything like sticker residue that wrapping in a towel and pouring on boiling water will loosen the glue.

On the ignition lock hole, use what you like. Don't use abrasives on the fork leg holes tho!

maplins sell a sticky label remover, we use it in the shop for taking the remains of labels off glass & displays etc. It works really well and has a nice orange smell to it! no overly expensive either.

Methalated spirit tops for this sort of job,use sparingly.Very flamable no naked flames,available from any chemists.Hope it helps.

Petrol..... dip an old rag in it and wipe

parrafin, diesel, meths, wd40, petrol in that order.

petrol / wd40 will remove grease quicker than parafin / meths will so be very careful about getting it onto bearings as theyll need a full clean and re-grease if you do. there also more flammable than parrafin :)
