520 chain/sprocket.

Hi everyone,

First post! (for about 5 years). I used to be a member when I lived in the UK but since then have moved to Oz.
Now I have just acquired a 93 model NC30 track bike with a questionable history and trying to get it up to spec
so I can have some fun at Eastern Creek.

Half the battle is working out what has already been done so I'll be taking some pictures so I can ask stupid questions.

Anyway, lets start with a couple of easy ones, I've already done a search and couldn't find the answers so:

1. When fitting a 520 chain/sprocket, are there any spacers required for the sprockets? Particularly the front?

2. Bike has been sitting for a while. When we started it and rode around the car park (sounded sweet) it was smoking a bit. Is this normal or should I be worried. It was blue (oil) smoke, although there wasn't much of it.

Cheers for now...

Al.

520 is just slightly narrower so there's less rolling friction so common on race bikes and should be a straight swap with no modifications.
I'd be a bit concerned about any smoke. Blue smoke might indicate burning oil and that aint good. You need to get busy with your spanners mate and find out more.

Thanks dude.

Yep, oil smoke can never be good (unless it's a 2 stroke).

I'll have to look into it further but I guess I was wondering if there any "known" reasons why
an NC30 would burn oil, so I know where to start looking.

Are they known for valve stem seals, for example?

Or

If it's something we would expect from a bike that's been sitting for while.

Nice one....

Hi,
I think that you may be right with the valve stem seals. If the bike has been stood for ages, the seals may have dried/cracked or perrished and now let a little oil through. I am guessing that everything else seemed okay?
