I have not been able to start my bike this morning,i took my tank off and petrol just poured from the tap. With the diaphram stuck open would this cause issues with starting and running the bike ?

yes as it would flood your carbs and even worse your cylinders

It shouldnt flood the carbs unless you have problems with the carbs...

Even when fuel is flowing the carbs should shut off the flow once they are full, this is what the float pin is for, many old bikes dont have a vaccum tap and you can leave them on. the trouble is if the carbs arnt sealing properly (this will cause running problems anyway as they will over-fill)

They the carbs over-flow onto the bike and sometimes into the engine depending on the bike.

i have the HRC mod on mine mart, if i forget to close the tap after a ride, 12hours later my bike pisses its self by over flowing the carbs! so bassed on what jamie says about his vaccuum staying open its affectivley gone HRC, and chances are its over flowed and flooded them

oh and when i forgot to switch it off it was bastard to start!

If that's the case then he needs new float needles.
