hey folks, getting that lovely tappat sound from my engine. my question to you all is, to stop this noise do i only check the valve clearances and replace the shims as required?

Get some real thick oil & put saw dust in it - that'll quiten it down for a bit.

On a serious note check the valve clearances and replace as necessary. Inspect the camshafts for any signs of wear, this is usually noticed by an uneven tapping sound rather than a regular tapping noise of worn valve clearances


* Do not put EP90 in your VFR, it's a real bad idea

no mate. its a screw and locknut type

The NC2x Engine is disassembled in the same manor as described in the original guide, the valve clearances are measured in the same way also. If there is a valve that needs adjusting the NC2x does not use shims as a means of adjusting clearence, it uses Locknuts and adjusters.

Simple loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster in or out to give more / less clearance until the valve is in spec.

I would check your oil level first if the tappets are noisy.

Rick Oliver does an exchange shim service, just methodically go through your shims and work out what sizes you need, once you have done this give him a bell and he will try and make sure you have the closest fit shim for your gaps.

I'll need to get in and have a look at them soon. I just done an oil and oil filter change and thats not stopped it. So looks like it's def needing done. Don't know how an oil change can sort that...but heard people talking about it...thought it was an old wife's tale...
