Hello, this is my first post on this board but I've been lurking since i bought an NC30 late last year.

Not long after I bought it, it sprang a coolant leak in the joint that attaches the coolant pipe to the block (my terminology may be wrong, i'm fairly new to this level of detail, but eager to learn - hence buying an NC30 as a project). I have included a picture to show where the leak is (pic not of my actual engine), in case my description is too bad!



I repaired it initially using a Radweld type of liquid, but I'm looking to do a proper job of it now, so my question is, is it possible to purchase that specific pipe/fittings/gaskets etc, or am I looking at needing a new block?

I have looked everywhere not found anything, but it's made more difficult by not knowing what that part is actually called!

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but unfortuntately that is a slightly different issue to mine. That is regarding a problem with the oil pipes, where as my leakis actually coolant, from the soft metal joining the water pipe onto the engine block.

I erm....borrowed....that pic from the NC24 thread, and have updated it with a green mark to show the exact location of my leak, in case that makes it any more clear than my previous pic.

Ah, nevermind, there is a very similar thread to the one you posted, with different info in it.

It does suggest that the bit i'm after isn't available to buy separately though

So I guess I either find someone who can weld it up, or I look at rebuilding the whole engine, with a new block.....ah well, I was after a learning experience!

So is the actual top engine casing cracked, or is it just the joint between the coolent pipe and the block?

It's just the joint (union?) between the pipe and the block. I think that once I have got the carbs off (proving to be a right pain due to rusted, destroyed clamp screws!), I should be able to get the pipe and unions off, and see if i can get it welded.

if it's just the union, between the pipe and the case you can seal that with hylomar instant gasket. i have used it a few times and never had a problem. just take the pipe off clean the mating surfaces and apply a little hylomar leave it for a couple of mins then fix back together. hey presto job done

You should be able to find a spare water pipe cap from a blown engine without too many worries, better than a repair job IMO. Just stick a wanted ad looking for a blown motor in the classifieds.

As cammo has said.

Those caps bolt on each side of the pipe, theres an o-ring on each end of the pipe and a gasket at the base of the cap.

Best to get one from a broken engine rather than bodge it :)

Thanks very much guys. that's exactly the information I was looking for....but was clearly too incompetent to find!

I definitely want to replace it with a new bit, rather than bodge, the radweld that's in there is working fine at the moment, but now that I'm stripping it all down, I'd rather replace it with a proper fix.

I will get a gasket ordered from David Silver, and try and get my hands on a second hand water pipe cap (it is indeed part 13 in that diagram).
