Hi and welcome,
firstly this is a very well covered topic, as is many other issues with these. The search function is useful.
That does seem high, my RVF rarely goes to the half way mark, but I dont often sit in traffic, most of the time its a few mm to the left of vertical on the temp scale. These bikes do and are known to get notoriously hot.
If I were you, Id check and clean the lower rad- they take a lot of crap and can struggle at the best of times. Then clean, flush and bleed the cooling system correctly and use Fuchs Pro cool.
Also is the fan coming on when it gets higher up the temp scale? If not see if it even has a fan- many are stupidly removed for clearance of race systems and then sold with a standard in place with no Rad fan. And also check the thermostat in the usual manner.
HTH
And remember to enjoy :D

+1 above :) they do get very hot, sitting in traffic on a hot day mine often went in the red.
try not to let it though as it could blow a gasket then its bad news!!
youll sort it, loads about cooling problems on here. try v4-the workshop :D

on the overheat topic, does anyone RVF's/VFR's fan keep running if the bike is real hot when you switch it off? My RVF's fan runs but as soon as you switch the key to off the fan stops...is that normal?
My 1995 VFR's fan would keep running even with the key out till it cooled enough and then switch off..is that what they should do maybe?

The fans should keep running even when the ignition key is turned off - if the bike is hot enough.
Its the bikes way of keeping cool after getting hot and preventing any headgasket problems.
Thats why the ignition barrel/key switch has the fan wired through it - have a look at the wiring diagrams - it will shut off once the thermostat in the rad 'opens' and breaks the circuit.

when I got home the other day my fan was running with the engine off but key on, as soon as I turned the key off the fan stopped and when turned on again the fan kicked back in...not right then? or does it have to be hotter than what it was to keep running without the key. Maybe stat's gone?

The fan will only run when the ign is on.
FWIW if you are missing a fan I have one spare[1].

[1] Plus I've got another spare, I don't need two!

I dunno about mine, I still haven't ridden it.
All this work for a bike that I still can't ride.

lol...too much work & not enough play is bad for you
I have all the fans in there...so its weird that my old VFR 's fan would run with out the ign on, I guess the bloke who had it in Japan before me must have riged it some how.
