Newbie running probs

New to me NC30 -
The bike shop where I bought it from said it was running badly & someone had assembled the carbs (jets/needles???) back to front - so put them 'right' & balanced the carbs, like I say, all feels good - the bike pulls strong through the revs, but does smell a bit rich.

1st ride out -
I pulled over after 10 mins as I'd forgot to check the fuel the bike was running great but the fuel was lowish..... checked the fuel tap & it looked to be set to reserve, so put it to 'on' & set off - 1st overtake, bike splutters I fumble & switch to reserve 1/2 mile later the bike is struggling to run & stalls but when it was running the fuel pump was clicking (as if dry) but there is still some fuel left in the tank.

Before I fill up & go for another run is there anything obvious to check - fuel filters, fuel tap etc, are the pumps reliable or are they like the ones fitted to the Africa Twins that pack up or struggle when the tank is low???

I have an idea what to check but some pointers would help as the bike is new to me & haven't started fiddling/familiarising with it yet & have no workshop manual yet either!

Cheers all, Phil

no pump on them there just gravity fed when the vacuum hose opens the diaphram,

the vacuum hose is subject to problems if original

there are no inline filters as such

just the standard ones on the on and reserve straws within the tank

and also 4 filters on the under side of float valves inside the carbs.

Ok, thanks - could have sworn that it was a ticking fuel pump, obviously not.....

Tank filter/ fuel tap will be the 1st port of call then.
The vacuum pipe to the tap looks newish & could be OEM as it has a moulded bend as it leaves the tap but felt soft/thin walled when hot.

Cheers, Phil

yeah id recomened a Rick Oliver Replacement hose there only £3. there thicker walled and wont crush etc when hot.

there isnt a pump on the NC30 only on the CBR 400s.

the ticking will probally be your valve clearances, id get that checked now before i gets worse.

Yep, a nev vacc hose might be in order - this one was easily squeezed flat with my fingers when warn - feels like the hose used on Morgan Carbtune.

Valves & carb strip/check was going to be next winters job - the motor is sweet as anut & quiet- well right up to the ticking that came with the fueling issue.

I shone a torch in the tank this morning, the fuel & 2 filters are clean but there is only about 1 - 1 1/2" of fuel in there, but should run ok on reserve.
I'll take the tank off & check the hoses & fuel tap before refilling

Cheers for the input, Phil
