Spluttering and dying on startup

I bought an RVF last year. Runs absolutely fine on a run however last year 2 maybe 3 times in the 2 months of running it, when left to warm up (without choke) it would start to splutter. I managed to catch it and gradually clear her out with some revs. Was as if the plugs were oiling up. It was worse when i used the choke the once.

I got it moted just over a week ago after not riding it since October. I started it every few weeks without a problem. I only did 7 miles after the mot as i had other commitments. This week i started her and she quickly started having this problem of spluttering only this time she died and i couldn't restart her. Pulled the tank off and noticed the fuel pipe from the tank was completely dry. Got some fuel down it and fired up a treat. Went off to an international mx meeting a fair way from home... come the end of the day she did it again. This time I switched the fuel tap to reserve and she fired up very quickly hurray

The tap has a diaphragm in it doesn't it? Therefore a vacuum pipe im guessing may be the problem? The thing i don't understand is surely it would misbehave on a run?? Its always on startup at low revs. Stopping at lights etc has never lead to problems. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like the diaphram in the fuel tap is sticking. I think Rick O does a tap repair kit. Also probably worth getting some thick wall vacume hose too (just incase) ;)

Thanks for the reply. I will try and get his number and give him a ring. Good idea I think with the vacuum pipe. I will replace them all. The coolant hoses are another thing I'm worried about. Old rubber hoses and pipes can see the best of bikes being towed home!

I put off getting a diaphram kit.... yesterday my bike packed up lol.

Took the tank etc off and saw the problem straight away. The vaccuum pipe had broke into two. The small part left on the carbs crumbled into pieces. Was too short to use so used a fuel pipe to get me up and running. Fired straight up however as I expected with it being thinner wall at really high revs it must be collapsing as the bikes suddenly starts to die. I WILL call Rick Oliver tomorrow :)

Yep! old perished vaccum hose.

I managed to get some silicon hose the same diameter from ebay, i think it was about 99p a meter.. wonderful heat resistant stuff
