Hell! Is this normal??

Ehup,

Right, so being a splendid day and all that - just been home at lunchtime and swapped the car for the FZR

I've only ridden this bike properly once since buying, and it wasn't in so much anger as the roads were still covered in crap. So, just been blatting down the local ring today on the way back today and it was doing something that i'm not sure it should be!!

2nd or 3rd gear, not sure which i was in, full throttle, revs rise to about 9k then seem to go from 9k to 11k in what seems an instant and a rapid increase in engine revs. So, either the clutch slipping (but don't appear to be losing drive), or this is the EXUP valve thingy at work which could suggest it's a bit sticky?? Or is what i'm experiencing 'normal'?

Would love to know! ;)

Rob

I'd agree with clutch slip also. Maybe check the cable isn't adjusted too tight.

9k is when mine gets 'going'. Give it a good thrash to teach it a lesson #. You'll either break or cure it :)
(as in burn off any oil or fry your clutch which may need looking at anyway)

# This is just my opinion

Would i not lose drive though if it were the clutch (i did when my Integrale clutch shit itself last year!!).

It just kind of steps up 2k revs at a point and then continues revving out like a wasp on speed!!

are you running fully synthetic oil?
as these old clutches don't like it, makes em slip,
try warming the bike up properly before you abuse it
had a similar problem on mine, had the clutch apart and all measures up fine, put some ebc springs in it, but the best result i got was from taking the drive sprocket cover off and cleaning the shit out the clutch push-rod mechanism, stops it sticking ;)
but it's still got a slight slip if it's not warmed up properly before you give it some, once it's warm it's fine
something to do with the viscosity of the oil,
believe it or not as the oil warms it thickens and helps the clutch grip which is why fully synthetic is no good it doesn't thicken as much semi-synthetic

Do the revs just go up with no real rise in speed ???
That's probably the clutch.

You should a small amount of play in the lever (ie it shouldn't be tight), check it at the adjuster.
It could be that somebody has tried to adjust it and got it a touch tight (I've done it). Firstly clean the inside the sproket cover like Hodgiderdy Dog siad, you need to get all the old chain lube out if it and put a bit of 3in1 oil on the mechanism. Put the cover on and prise off the round black bung in the sprocket cover and you'll see a screw and lock nut. Undo the nut and then slacken off the screw. Put a screwdriver through a sprocket so you can tighten both with your fingers, do up the screw until it touches then slacken it a touch, do the nut up while holding the screw ... it will take a couple of goes or you might be lucky.
Ride it and do a 3rd and 4th gear roll on to the red line, if it slips check it again, if it's adjusted ok then it could either be the wrong type of oil or the plates need changing

Thanks for the sound advice chaps

Didn't do it on the way home so will keep an eye on it and see how it goes! (I know i'm on semi synth)
