Hi all, just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

I did about 150 miles today, had the lights on the whole time when I stopped at some lights the bike cut out, when I tried to start it again it's battery seemed to be flat, I had to bump start it.

I seems anytime I do a long ride with the lights on, it's flat after, if I don't use the lights it seems fine.

sounds like the bike isnt charging,

check all the plugs on the charing system, alternator reg/rec etc

then perform a voltage test

definitly sounds like regulator/rectifier issue

Cheers guys, annoying regrec I got a new one about a year ago with the cooling fins, and a new battery.

It's always made the temp jump up when I turn on the lights with this regrec and the previous for some reason.

Oddly when I mentioned that to Honda they didn't seem to think that was a major issue and during it's service everything checked out as fine, but that was almost a year ago now.

Sounds like the generator is going to die.. What results have you got when testing it for AC V in each phase and also, what resistance do you get too?

Booking it in to get the stator checked because I don't have the tools here unfortunately, the garage said they'd only charge a fiver to check if the alternator was kicking out the right output. I have managed to find a new stator for £80 if I do need one though.

a £7 multimeter from maplins and you can check the whole charging system yourself, and keep the tool afterwards
Trust me when i say i knew naff all about bikes, let alone electrics when i bought my first NC30.. some will argue that i still don't (it's been a steep learning curve)
but the only way you're gonna learn anything is by attempting it yourself..

i bought my multimeter and spent a couple of hours of youtube learning how to use it...
you'll have a great sense of achievment when you do it yourself and it actually works!!

Cheers chap, I had a gander at some of the multi-meters at Maplins I wasn't sure how much power it kicks out didn't want to blow up the multi-meter if it was a cheaper one.

Maybe I should do that, I have some other issues with the fairings too though that I want them to sort so I can actually get them off myself.

At the moment there are one or two bolts that are magnetic twist ones, some are normal philips type, the magnetic ones have a back on them that the garage held them in place with one of those telescopic magnet things when putting the fairings back on.

I wanted them to replace them with some quick release ones I bought then I will feel more comfortable taking the fairings off it and be able to actually put them back on.

it has worked fine from day one..and the instructions that come with it are good. the youtube tutorials are very helpful as well..

i can tell by the way you write you aint confident with doing bits on the bike but seriously mate, get stuck in!
I was exactly the same as you, shitting myself over every little job.. i have had the whole back end off now and rebuilt a few calipers since i started. im so glad i actually attempted the jobs. not only saving me shedloads of cash it has also given me confidence to do more and more..
it's the only way you'll learn and once you start you will wonder why you was fretting so much. the fairings should go back on no probs..
keep a box with loads of compartmets and put the bolts for each section in different compartments. take pics on ya mobile or label the compartments if you have to. once you have removed them a couple of times you'll be whipping them off in minutes after that!

everyone on here is well helpful so dont be afraid to ask the stupidest questions, you'll get an answer...

Cheers chap, I reckon I will get the fairings off then and have a look at the connectors at least, to see if they're burnt at all.

I have had the top fairing off before once when I replaced the battery and regulator rectifier but that was only because it had two bolts and one cable going into it :D When I did change it though the cable and connector going into it was in perfectly good condition.

Anything within the belly part of it has put me off

I am in Derbyshire, do many people from here get together for ride outs at all? I tend to go over in the direction of Bakewell quite a bit and the country roads around the peak district area.
