Hi all just a quick question! Are the coils, leads and cdi unit on an rvf 400 the same on a vfr 400? Having some electrical problems and thinking about swapping my coils and leads with my mates vfr to see if there's any difference!

Many thanks

Jono

Coils and leads are the same and are interchangeable, cdi's are different.

What issues are you having??

Right ok thanks mate. Basically bike won't rev out in 4th 5th and 6th gear gets to 10,000 rpm and stops starts to miss and splutter, I've cleaned the carbs out and checked the jets Everythings ok, fitted a new air filter. Which was making me think maybe it's more electrical, I've fitted a new set of plugs and it did make a huge difference but still won't rev out which makes me think it's electrical related? before anyone asks, the bike is fully derestricted and used to run fine until I took it off the road for the passed 2 years.

The only other thing is was searching through some threads last night and found someone with the same problem, turned out it was the rubber flap and snorkel to the airbox.

On the snorkel to the airbox there is 3 foam strips lining the snorkel I removed these... Do you think this could affect it? Possibly taking too much air when it gets up to top speed? Also my rubber flap has a hole init.

Sounds like rubber flap syndrome to me, try covering the hole and see if that helps

I will try it tonight when I get in from work. The rubber flap, does it have to sit flush with the frame? It's a triangle sort of shape with a press stud at the top holding it into the frame, mines ripped where the press stud goes causes it to move about abit

If its ripped up then maybe that's causing it. It should attach under the headstock then over the both the front 2 carb inlets.

coils are not the same, they are positioned differently and so will not reach the spark plugs from one point, unsure about other!

If it's loose where the headstock is do you think when it's reaching 10,000rpm the snorkel could be trying to suck it in causing it to restrict the air flow?

No. Your fucked rubber flap is creating turbulant air at high speed which nc's don't like. Pull it out and your notice it happening at much lower speeds.

sorted my problems finally!
i fixed the rubber flap to find no difference, i removed the tank again and checked the air intake slides under the air filter and trumpets, found 2 of them to be sticking slightly, i removed the plastic caps removed and cleaned the slides, got it all back together and took it for a run to find its running better than ever!

thanks for the help everyone
