NC23 rrj - got it going after a clean up, brakes serviced, braided lines added, cleaned and sealed carbs again. 'fixed' the cushdrives with innertubes to stop the judder on take up, cleaned the chain with paraffin and relubed - it was literally caked in crud but you can tell its metal coloured now again! All good apart from did notice it has 110 jets in the catrbs for some odd reason (incorrect per haynes) but i will change em over to 115's in the near future.

went for a quick ride on it, the sh1theap still it persists in bogging down from idle (1300 revs) when i blip the throttle, cut out a couple of times just as i was about to get going at lights/in traffic, its a bit of a mare. I am now wondering whether this is just the bike and will always do this?

its pi55ing me off now tho. I am not sure what it can be if its not normal, although i have just remembered i had the lights on all the while. I will check if turning em off alters how the little sh1t behaves (maybe its drawing power).


i know ideally it needs to go on a dyno but i havent got the funds at the mo.

It isn't normal....

Sounds either carb or electrical related. Could be something as simple as the carb pilot screw settings being incorrect. Did you clean the carbs when you had them open? Check that the slides are seated correctly also.

Having the lights on won't affect performance if the charging system is working properly - check it.

It's a bit unfair blaming a bike for the problems when in reality it's just a load of parts bolted together that will operate properly together when well maintained.

but it sounds a bit unfair to blame him for the bike not working.. he may maintain the bike well, but with one thing not set up corectly, doesnt mean the owner is to blame..

'Fixing' the cushdrive with bike inner tubes, and knowing that the carb settings are incorrect yet still swearing at the bike (I'm not a fan of cruelty to motos ) would perhaps point towards the bike not being not-so-well maintained.

The problem sounds like a carb issue to me.

but hasnt he just purchased it?
then he is trying his best to fix it with available funds to the best of his standards.. he is then picking up the peices from someone elses bike-cruelty...

Cammo - fixing a cush drive with inner tube - ie rubber. isnt my idea, its a mechanics fix if there arent too badly worn. Ask one - I asked one from a dealer and thats what he recommended.....and guess what..... it works and saved me forking out for new ones. Cant see whats so wrong with that.

I am trying to maintain a bike that hasnt been looked after for god knows how long, you should see the amount of crud it is possible to collect on a chain and swingarm, but i am learning as i go so have patience with me! I am not a pleb as might be being implied, just need to figure stuff out before i am an expert, like you

Did i clean the carbs when i had them off and open......mmmm of course I did !!! In fact after doing it first time and still having issues, I even went out and bought an air compressor so i could blow it all out properly. Trust me, they are clean now.

At the end of the day i agree, its carbs or electrics. Cant see it being electrics but i am not messing with them when it all seems to be fine, charges ok but i will check the bulbs are correct as i understand if they arent, this can be an issue. Saying that tho -Its probably carbs - i will get it on a dyno soon as funds allow.

I did adjust the pilot screws as i thought it was running rich, hence issues on takeup, black sooty plugs, stinky fumes - but it didnt solve it, so rather than adjust things and fk it up through not knowing enough, its dyno next.

At the end of the day, the bike is old and has issues - i am sorting them rather than the bike being broken up. If i try and get it wrong, big deal, i put it right next time......there is no reason a relatively competent diy mechanic cant have a go. Although i am worried about the lean engine, bang, gone-scenario, hence its dyno time !

I do appreciate all the help given on here...... I posted my message above after working on the bike for endless hours at night after kids and missus had gone to bed so i didnt get nagged for not spending time indoors! then taking it out on the one dry day i had seen for ages, with fingers crossed. The it starting cutting out here and there and i ended up getting muchus peeved off.

I love the bike really........... thats better.
