My Cbr's idle is most irregular - pulls like a train off the throttle but burbles, rises & dives on tickover... would this be a carb balence problem?

Probably yes. Balancing can make a big difference.

Ok, will have to get myself a set of gauges... can balance my Four by taking the filters off and looking down the end of the carbs.
