I removed the rear caliper on my bike on Sunday as i'm fitting braided hoses front and back. While i'd got my caliper off i decided to change the old pads i hadn't got round to doing when i fitted the disc, as at the time i hadn't decided which type to go for. Anyway when i tried to push the pistons back they were solid,so idecided to strip the caliper for a right good clean up. Took the pistons out and they're fine after a clean up, but the seals are wan*ered. So my next question is what is the best way to fit the seals, fit them dry into the caliper and grease or just lube with brake fluid before rebuilding? If grease is required which type?

i used brake fluid to lube mine but red rubber grease is the one people recomend,
im sure the haynes recomends silicon grease.

i let the seals sit in brake fluid for ten minutes first.

Ok thanks lads i think i'll just use brake fluid to lube the seals and hopefully all should be well.

Red rubber grease is just a proprietary silicon grease, red so that wrench monkeys can tell what's in their hands before using it. Recommended is to use that or any other silicon grease in the grooves before inserting the seals, this may or may not help keep corrosion at bay. I do it in hope, but have no proof either way. Does help you get the pistons back in easily and square if that's any use to you, but so would adding some clean brake fluid as a lubricant.

Do NOT use any mineral grease as it will swell the seals with time.

Thanks for that info matey. It makes sense now why its red grease thats used and not normal grease.
