Hiya All,

RE:New brake pads - suggestions for a CBR400?

I mainly do welsh twisties, but also do a little commuting into work as well.

(One of the front left brake pads is flopping around in the caliper for some reason. I'm going to take apart and take a look this weekend. Will replace all the front pads if there is a problem, and just need your advise on best sets to buy)

Hope you can advise
Cheers
Martin

HH sinterd are 1 of the best.
if you have the dosh.. go for carbon Lorraine

EBC are midfield do the job

Stay AWAY from eco-tree-hugging bio-degradable pads. they are crap!

Anything for the rear - it does very little or even no work. I don't think I have ever replaced the rear pads before.

Invest in good pads for the front - thats what matters

Hi Marty,

its probably worth giving the pistons a clean while you are there. Get some brake fluid and a toothbrush and give everything a good scrub to get rid of crud and then spray with brake cleaner before putting the pads in.

If youve got a pad flapping, it sounds like everything might be a bit gunked up.

also, make sure the pins that go from the fixed, piston side of the caliper, to the floating side are free. I copperslipped mine but there is probably something better that you should use.

"I copperslipped mine"
+1

as i found out the hard way....
dont let the pistons come out too far after pads are removed. as i went to gently push mine back in, the other one popped out and i had brake fluid all over my leg and front rim! what was a 30 min job turned out to be a 2-3hr job!
1st time in 9yrs i have done that! never again.

most mechanics recommend a straight ebc std pad for front and an HH sintered for rear as yes stated as above not used alot but when in the shit the rear needs to stop fast and reliably ( don't buy cheap crap off of ebay, have a look and read reviews via google). i have ebc fronts and picked up carbon lorraines by looking around prior to needing them and got a good price on ebay.

you want the best stopping power on the front
standard on the rear....
75% stopping is supposed to be from the front. the rear often locks up and is longer any use.
its why most people only buy braided lines for the front not the rear.
