Hi, is there a simple way to bypass the ignition switch ?
the barrel came out with the key today (it is 22 years old!)
Can i just join the red and red striped wire?

If you join the red and the red/black wire the ignition will be permanently on, so you need a switch of some sort.

Easiest thing to do is use the kill switch for that, just cut the wires from the kill switch (leave some length) and run the red and red/black wire to each side of the switch. Wiring diagram below:

Any chance I could do this to set up a remote ignition?

I really want one so I can warm the bike up in the morning!

I've been running a remote ignition for the past year without any problems. The bike was stolen twice and decided not to replace the ignition switch for a third time plus the damage to the top yoke. Easiest way was by fitting a V2 cyclone alarm on ebay. Simplistic wiring diagram but fairly idiotproof.The bike can still be hotwired if they connect two wires, but I've moved the block connecter so its not accessible. As for starting the bike, its a double press on the remote. Kill switch still kills the engine as the switch is undisturbed.With the cold its needed full choke but when above freezing its fine. Alarm was £26 or thereabouts, a little short of the cost of a pattern ignition. Just a word of caution , is that its best to solder in the connections and tape up afterwards. Alarm is the size of a fag packet which is in the tail.about 6 connections to be made.

I joined the red and red striped wire to the black and black striped wire on the kill switch.
All seems ok but starter will still operate with kill off,
is this correct?

Yeah that's right. It won't start though because the ignition won't be on.

I did this bypass mod a while ago but never used the bike
i tried to start it today but no spark, engine turns over fine, idiot lights etc all ok
any ideas?

Joined the ignition wires and put kill switch wiring back as it was and got a spark!
Bike has stood for 12 months, i forgot how hard these could be to start
anyone got an easy way to start the bike? Ive dropped the fuel, changed plugs, used easystart
and it almost goes, then fouls plugs.
It did 20 laps at last years manx gp last year no probs
