is it possible to adjust the height of the gear lever to my exact settings?

my mech told me that there are only two positions i can set it too. either setting was too high or too low and he told me that it cant be helped.

maybe he was lazy to adjust slowly for me? if its not true then i'd go mess around and try adjusting it myself. can anyone verify?

THANKS

If you have a reversed lever bolted direct to the shaft spines there are only a few options, but the positions are fairly coarse.
A linkage rod gear pedal has infinate exact pedal positions.

What bike?

If it looks like this, then it is adjustable to any position.
The rod has left hand thread one end, a right hand one the other, so it can be shortened or lenthened to sit the lever in the correct position.
