Hi Guys and Girls. Ive got a 1wg for trackdays that currently has a 140/60-18 dunlop gp alpha10 tyre on the rear. Its great. but after doing two trackdays its looking like a change is getting due! BUT I cannot get hold of one anyway? can anybody help. Ive started to look at fitting a 17" rear wheel and have been told a thundercat wheel will fit and will only require the spacers modified??? But ive seen NO mention through the forum and Im starting to get confused at what will work and what wont? and how easy it is (ie if I need lathes and drills etc its a no hoper). cheers please help

Had a look on the web and they seem to have discontinued the Alpha 10, which is a real pity.

You can make the 3TJ wheel and swingarm fit but you need to get a bit jiggy with the width of the arm at the front. Best person to talk to is Kala either on here or PB Forum, she makes up spancers so she shold be able to sort you out.

Now for the next bit. The tyres used on the rear will make it handle a bit odd with the front 110/70/17. really it's better to have a 120 on the front, you can put that on your rim but they work better on the 3.5" wheel.

Sooooo ..... it really depends how far you want to take your bike

you'll need to thin dwn the width of the arm (assuming 3en1) then reduce the diameter of the bore for the 1wg swing arm spindle. Then prob have some machining of the sprocket carrier done to line up the chain.
I just happen to have a 3en1 conversion I could be persuaded to part with! got everything apart from the sprocket! Have used it on track with 120 front and 17" rear, was running supercorsas.

i tried to PM you but it won't send. Have you still got the swingarm etc? i have an '86 1wg i'm trying to convert to 17" rear. Will the red r6 shock still fit with this swingarm?

What swingarm did you modify? i have some 3tj stuff knocking about to attempt it myself but not sure of how much work will be involved. have got any pics?

Couple of people have been asiking about this so I'm going to put it here rather than repead it 3 times!
it's the entire 3tj swing arm, spindle, rim (no tyre) caliper, disc, cush drive and sprocket carrier.
It has been narrowed at the pivot to allow it to fit the frame, but i don't have a clue if this would be the same as your bike! It has had the pivot 'hole' narrowed with a bushing to allow use of the 3en1 pivot bolt. The sprocket carrier has apparently had a fw mm shaved off to allow it to line up properly and you could fit the r6 shock no prob, and probably wouldn't need the adapter as it is a close match to the 3en in length. Had to use different dog bones which are also included!
Have had a look on ebay for going prices of the bits (gone for the lower end!) so i recon disc, caliper, pads (nearly new!) mount, swingarm, shock mounting and dog bones, spindle, rear master cylinder and carrier comes to about £120 just for parts not including the cost to have it machined as it has been done! or the rim. With rim bout £180 would be able to include a d208 (Ithink) rear tyre in decent enough nick to pass an MOT (it did before i removed it!) but add £5 for fitting or loose for nowt! Obviously depending on where you are there will need to be poastge added, i'll have a weigh up and measure and get a quote for it when i get home!
Hope this answers everyone's questions!

The 3TJ swingarm will fit in all of the 1WG frames, you just need a bush/top hat to reduce the diameter of the pivot tube from 20mm to 16mm.

The TRX/Thundercat/FZR600R rear wheel won't go into any of the 1WG swingarms- it's too wide. The 3TJ wheel will go in but it needs new spacers and a little trim of the sprocket carrier.

The cheapest/easiest way to fit a 5 x 17" rear wheel into any 1WG (or the 2TK) is to use a TRX850 rear end, complete. I tend to ignore 3TJ parts as the wheels, calipers and hangers are stupidly expensive, whereas the TRX stuff is the same as the FZR600R and Thundercat and readily available.

Failing all of the above, an XJR400 rear wheel is 4 x 17" and will fit straight in to the 1WG swingarm using the standard spacers, except you need the rear brake parts because the disc is slightly larger. These wheels are quite rare though.

Send me a PM if you get stuck, I've done loads of wheel/swingarm swaps on loads of bikes (I'm putting a 2TK arm into a TZR250 using a Mito wheel at the minute.) Actually, thinking about it, a Mito 3 or 6 spoker will go into a 1WG arm too, but you'd have to sort the brake caliper hanger out.

Sorry to sound thick but when you say rear end complete, you mean all the swingarm wheel and gubbins I assume.

Yes. You need to trim the TRX arm across the pivot to fit it in the frame, but the parts are much more common. The TRX arm is aluminium so is nice and light.

Here's my old (scruffy ) 3EN1 with a TRX rear end, R6 shock, TRX yokes & wheel and Thundercat forks- fully adjustable all round and it handled really well. I'm kind of sorry I broke it now, but it was a feasibility study more than anything else.



edit- that pic shows TRX forks, it actually ended up with Thundercat forks.

looking at the prices for trx stuff I recon I've been pretty fair on the price for the 3tj stuff!

Hi, cant you just fit a bridgestone and save yourself loads a hassel? BT090 should be good enough for track days, i never tried them tho so cant comment (trackdays or the tyres) but have BT092 on my VFR road bike, i still got hisports on my FZR!!!
