Hi

Will a worn clutch bearing cause a knocking sound while idling in neutral (1989 SP - GK73A)? If I press the clutch level, the sound gets more faint. I want to replace the friction plates & springs, but would like to replace the bearings as well if that is the cause of the problem.

yerh its just the clutch plates and basket worn should be fine few of my old bikes do it

Thanks for the response, do you mean the metal plates that go between the friction plates? If so, replacing them as well will resolve the issue...

yea mine rattles when its sat idling almost like a snatching noise, when riding and let off throttle it seems to clutch slip too. seems fine through gears and doesn't slip when accelerating seemingly.

I've just dropped the engine out cos i got a spare and couldn't figure/be arsed to find out what was wrong with it. but if someone knows i'd love to sort it out as i know my old engine was well thrashed and i remember it started using quite a drop of oil!

You are probably looking at a new clutch basket eventually, the 'fingers' will be wearing out. The friction plates and spacer plates have a castellated rim. These castellations fit in between the fingers of the basket. Over time and with a good amount of use, the rotational forces going through the clutch will wear the fingers down so that the gap between the fingers and the castellations gets larger.

You might want to check the gaps against the factory tolerance level.
