Fuel tank fitment...normal?

Hey everyone

Some may know I am fixing up my bashed up track bike. I had the chance to work on it again and found an issue with the fuel tank.

Now the tank did fling off during the crash but the general shape of it seems okay...with some dings and a bent mounting tab thing. I tried to fit the tank on properly today since I got myself a new front tank rubber mount. Slotted the rubber into it's position under the tank and slid the whole tank onto the frame. It fit without issues and the side rubber mounts aligned well...however upon trying to fit the bolt...the hole of the tank, did not line up with the subframe thread hole. I had to pull the tank back a bit to fit the bolt, but if I do that the front rubber mount is not pushed against the frame tightly as I thought it would.

This may be a stupid question with most likely an obvious answer...but is the tank supposed to be pushed all the way to the front so that the rubber mount is tight...or slightly loose?

There is slightly movement on the tank when the bolt is in place.

Also what could be the cause...I can only think of the tank tab actually been pushed in (but doesn't seem that way) or the sub frame mounting point has moved...I highly doubt this so I am pointing my finger at the former.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers
Phong

I would bet you have fitted the rubber wrong, I had the same thing when I brought by bike out of storage. I removed the tank when it went in and when it came to getting it all back together a year later I had a brain fart and could not for the life of me get the tank to line up with the threaded subframe, even though it looked as if it was all lined up properly, it just wasn't right..

Its difficult to explain how the rubber fits but I ended up putting it on the top of the front tank piece that goes under the frame and you have to lift the tank from the rear to get it to fit right...

I know that sounds like a lot of noise but you may be able to get a mental picture??????
Sorry if you don't

if indeed you have put the tank front rubber mount on in the wrong position...just check out CMSNL...the microfische diagram will indicate how it is to go on...i had a blank moment too when i went to put my tank back on but that site sorted me

Hmmm I had a look at the microfiche picture and it seems to be in the right way. If all fails, I will probably put another set of rubber mounts to stop it from moving that tiny bit. Failing that, I will most likely get another tank when funds allow it.

It sounds like the front tank bracket might be bent?

Something would have to be bent for the tank to come off in the crash. :o

I don't have a spare tank to compare it to :(...might need to borrow someone's for a comparison or just get another tank.

Yeah the rear tab bent which in turn sheared and twisted the spacer/shim that the bolt slides through. The hole in the tab is all mangled and the spacer/shim is not salvageable...however the bolt was still straight and on the frame :|.

well if it is mangled and bent then naturally you will have some issues fitting...that said if you wish you could chuck up a pic or two of the front and rear mounting tabs to show what you're trying to work with...

I think that might be a good idea...will do once I get a chance to work on it.

Finally got a chance to get the photos of my tank fitment. Took a while to get a shot that was clear enough so hope these pictures make sense.

This is when the tank is pushed up all the way it can go. The hole mis aligns by a fair bit. If I hold the tab down tight, the tank doesn't have much movement, if any.

This is the picture of the rubber mount when the tank is pushed forward as much as possible. The groove on the rubber does sit half way up the frame tab. For some reason I can't get it to sit any further forward. But in this position the tank still feels very safe and tight.

Image

This is a picture of the rubber when I have to pull the tank back, so that the hole in the back lines up. As you can see, the groove just sits on the tab...and the tank can sway left and right when you hold it on either side and swing it.

I will assume the tank is at fault here...but I won't dismiss that some other part of the bike can also be out of place. I hope it is something cheap to fix though...:(

Cheers in advance.
