The usual answer is not to bother - the std OE filter is the danglies.

You can get pukka HRC foam for a fiver a sheet but it only filters things bigger than shrews...

Yeah, the standard filter is great at what it's supposed to do; the PiperX mod works well and can be cleaned/washed & re-used; in saying that, some might say that it's actually a bit more restrictive than standard.?
My personal experience of it for the past 4 years (I think), is that it works fine with both the standard can, as well as with a Yamamoto half system + can! I've not rejeted my bike as yet since fitting this foam, nor after fitting the Yamamoto pipes, as advised by Dyno man!

Have you tried contacting Pipercross directly? http://www.pipercross.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I think the foam we need comes in 1 square foot bits?

It may be the standard jets that are holding your bike back a bit, not the air filter; my feeling regarding the PiperCross one, is that it performs just as well as the OE one, with the benefit of allowing it to be cleaned/washed.
Best thing to do is to get the bike on the Dyno for a power run (about £15), to see what the fuel mix is like. Does the engine rev cleanly from say around 4000rpm to redline?

hi - the bike runs well from 2000 to the redline. When i'm in 6th at between 5 and 6krpm and i roll on the throttle it does splutter a bit but not that much - the rest of the time its fine, dyno time is the next thing on my list but the nearest dyno is 70 miles away!! bit of a pain eh?! i'll get some bigger mains and see if there's any power difference, thanks for the advice
