Valve help needed

Hi, decided to check my valve clearances, well it took me a couple of hours stripping to finally get down to looking at the inners of my valve cover. Now I have only ever done this on a Honda single so have read and re-read the Haynes manual and it looked straight forward enough with the only problems I thought would be getting into the head.

But... I seem to have fallen at the first hurdle and cant continue. What it is simply, I cant work out which set of valves go to which cylinder. I assumed it would be easy, assuming the front eight for EX and the back eight for IN but of course it does not appear to be this way and I cant find the info in the Haynes manual, although it does say they are numbered I cant see it.

Im certain someone will know here but I will print the exact way the camshaft covers are marked.

Front
Left EX ~ IN --- Right IN ~ EX
----------------------------------
Left IN ~ EX --- Right EX ~ IN
Rear

I know the markings are confusing but the front row are all exhaust valves, the rear row all intake valves.

Thanks for the reply wozza, I will give it a go as I intended. I still think its odd why they are marked like that but im not the expert on these things, so im sure there is a reason, maybe?

cheers

Just a word on this.

I managed to check the clearances no problem. All exaust valves were mid tolerances, therefore fine. six of the Inlets were also fine with mid tolerance but the outer valves on 1 and 4 were just in tolerance for the R model, there fore a little tight but fine if reading the Haynes but any thoughts on this would be welcome. It was also a joy checking the plugs with so much room, these were a little oily otherwise fine.

No I never took any photos and its back together now. I just followed the Haynes it was easy enough to follow with the only problem being my original problem with the markings on the cam covers which threw me a bit.

I can't remember why the markings are like that. I ignored them when I did my clearances.
After changing clearances is a good time to balance your carbs.
