Top end on an nc24

Bought an 87 NC24 a month ago off a friend, got it cheap as a little play around bike, it seemed pretty tidy.

Anyway, im used to inline 4's, the bike seems to be lacking in top end pull, for a 400cc engine the midrange is pretty impressive, but i feel like im getting most of what the engine has to offer at 10krpm, it doesnt loose drive after 10k, it just doesnt seem to increase the amount its pulling much. im used to that being the point when the engine comes alive.

v4 trait or are we looking at a potential problem?

Other than that, very pleased with the bike, especialy in the twisties, the bike feels like it could go round anything at full throttle, and the noise

Also, the brake calipers are nearing death, probably the only well worn bit of the bike, ive heard that cbr900rr calipers will fit on with very little work, true or false? since the calipers are pretty worn if theres an option for a cheap easy upgrade id rather do that.

Maybe it just needs a good service and new plugs, carbs cleaned etc. as for the brakes get braided hoses and hh pads in there. good enough to near put you over the bars, ;) :o

it has braided hoses on already, considering giving the calipers a good clean, some nice new pads e.t.c.

Thinkin about putting on an aftermarket air filter and some new plugs, oil filter, oil, definaetly gonna clean the carbs and check clearances e.t.c while im at it.

Since the gritters have been out, its away for the winter, so its time for some fettling. Has an aftermarket can on i put it through its mot with it on, and apparently went through its last one with it on aswell so thats a plus  Tail lights are from a gsxr aswell :S looks good though so im not moaning.

You can't get them. It's a struggle getting OE spec ones, only four places in the UK that sell them to my knowledge.

It'll run like a bag of nails if you remove the air box to fit a universal K&N or similar.

Don't change the air filter to anything other than standard unless you want to spend ages messing with it.

Cbr900 calipers are for the NC30 and wont fit the 24.

The bike doesn't come alive after 10k, it's not like an inline 4, power delivery is pretty linear, can pull away in any gear.

It should pull to the red line in 6th.

If it isn't running great just check the carbs are set up properly and not been setup wrong, people often mix needles / jets up and get things in the wrong place.

Rebuilding the standard calipers with decent pads will really help, especailly if they've bene neglected as there sliding calipers and need to be able to slide.

Plus two pistons on each caliper is cheap to replace seals.. all seals can be had for around £45.

Guide there.
