Petrol on/off switch

Hi.
This might be a daft question.
The petrol on/off switch when the bike is not in use do I turn it to off.
Somebody told me to start the bike then turn the switch to off position & let the bike run out so theirs no petrol in the carbs.
I don't want to do this incase I do some sort of damage.

not in everyday use and if you are sure that the petrol tap works properly - that is, off the vacuum rather than all the time.
To test is simple, take the tank off - note carefully where the 2 hoses on the tap connect, turn the tap to on - if fuel flows, then the "HRC tap mod" has been done, which is not a good thing on a road bike.
You would then be best advised to turn the tap to off after riding.
if no fuel flows, then good. Just leave it on or res when you like..
Don't drain the carbs unless you are storing the bike for a long time

I agree with Mark on this one.
The fuel taps are normally vaccumn operated, so even when set to 'on' no fuel will flow until the engines cranked over / running.
Best to check this hasn't been disabled, if all is well you can leave it to 'ON'
If you are storing the bike and not running it for more than a month / 2 months then i'd drain the carbs.
'Running it until it stops wont do any damage but it won't 100% empty the carbs too, the best way to do this is to undo the 4 drain screws (1 on each carb) to let the petrol out of the carbs, then turn the tap to 'off' just to make sure no petrol can flow.
