Well the rear suspension on my bike could best be described as 'shocking' (haha sorry). A friend who has taken an assortment of bikes onto the track has advised me my suspension is way too soft. I have also noticed this (the rear of the bike feels weak when you throw it around a corner) lately. The rear shock, as far as I can tell, is stock, and it doesn't look like it's had any work done to it in the 34,000kms it has travelled.

The rear shock looks very old and dirty with grease and crap all over it. I'd like to get this sorted out before I do my track days in February 2011, since I've heard getting your suspension sorted can make a huge difference.

Anyways, what would you guys suggest I do? Get a motorcycle shock specialist to rebuild the rear shock? Replace the shock?

I should add that I don't want to be spending a ridiculous amount of money. I'm hoping to get away with spending under $350 for the whole job (I won't be doing it myself). I want the shock to look decent too, so maybe I should get the shock spring painted too? (Is this the best approach?)

As far as i know NC35 shocks cannot be rebuilt, cheapest option would be a RS250 shock or k6/7 600 gsxr shock, 03 CBR rr both fit with little mods.

You can get some good second hand cbr rr shocks for less than £100, you would need to mod the battery box a bit to fit it, but i don't think it is too much bother (but i have never tried).
or look for a second hand Nitron/Pensk shock.

My plan is a shock from Rick Oliver, and to get the 'jack up' plate to round it out.

Maybe a little more coin than you want to spend, but do it right, do it once bla bla bla

You should give RB Racing a call (www.rbimports.com.au), they're in Caringbah, just south of Sydney. They might be able to help you out with your suspension issues.

There's a guy in Melbourne who sells heaps of parts for RVF - southerncrosssports.
He may have one lying around or perhaps he can sort you out with one through his contacts.

TBH I don't think that amount will buy you much. Different story if the rvf shocks were rebuildable.

I wouldn't worry too much for your first few track days. The last thing you need to be worrying about is exctracting everything from the bike on your first outing.

How hard is it to install a shock? What sort of mods needs to be made to make the RS250, GSXR600 K6-K7 and 03 CBR600RR shocks fit the RVF400? This says it fits CBR600's from 03-05.. So does that mean any shock from a 600RR 03-05 will fit the RVF?

I'm not sure what's involved but I'd assume it's not going to take more than a couple hours for a place like RB Imports to install the shock..
