hi everyone,

im having alot of trouble recently with my rvf 400, for starters it always needs choke when i start it. But recently the electrics are all acting up, when i start it it sounds like the battery is about to die (battery bought 3 months ago) but sometimes it sounds fine, then when i ride it and stop and turn it off, it wont turn over again. I thought it was the reg rec, so bought a new one and fitted it today, but still the same problems!!! is it the battery?? or the alternator or starter?? i am terribly confused!

cheers,

kirsty

Hey Kirsty,

It's difficult to say without some more information.

It really does sound as if it is electrical.

Do you have a multimeter? If you do there are some tests you can do on the charging system to find out if everything is working properly.

(Altenator) -----> (Regulator) ------> (Battery)

Even though you brought a new battery recently, if you were riding aroud with a knackered regulator, it doesn't take very long to kill a new battery.

You need to start from the altenator, check that, then check the reg/rec and then check the battery.

If the reg/rec is ok now and the altenator is ok, it could be that you've just killed the battery.

It's always best to start by checking the altenator, as if that is broken it can easily break a new reg/rec and the battery...

This may sound silly, but have you checked the spark plugs? Having the wrong ones fitted can make a lot of difference. I've just changed mine this morning to the correct type after trouble starting yesterday and now it fires up instantly without choke.
