the right hand has a piece of metal welded in the left is near enough hold except for where the thread for the bar end is.

surely some one has to know why?

Because they're too heavy! As Ibby says, get some Rick O's! Or pick up some NSR250 alu ones for next to nothing off the Bay. Simples! And also, I don't know the actual answer, but it's been a while since I've sighted standard clipons
