does the NC24/21 oil cooler need bleeding or does it self bleed under oil pressure?

EDIT: also do you check the oil level after its run or before its run and on side stand or held vertically?

It doesn't need bleeding.

You check the bike the same as the other VFR's.

Level when cold (ie not run)

unscrew the dipstick, wipe it clean then rest it on, dont screw it.

Thanks

Ill go do that and make sure thats not causing the smokey issue. (It came to me thinking of things to check before ruling it as a internal issue)

So vertical and not on side stand (just want to make sure i check the level correctly)

Yep.

Wipe the dipstick clean, rest it on the hole you unscrewed it from, don't screw it in then lift it out and look at the stick
