Obviously it shouldn't be so bloody dirty (soon to be fixed!) but should those 4 trapezium-shaped holes be empty? I've seen wheels (not off NC's) with those similar holes and they have pieces of rubber that go in the holes..

If I am supposed to have them, will it hurt not having them? And where can I get them from?

Also, can anyone tell me what size the rear wheel nut is? I didn't have a socket big enough so had to use an adjustable wrench with a breaker bar but it kept slipping off and I ended up damaging the nut (whoops!)

Lastly, when I tighten the rear wheel nut, do I have to do it up as tight as it was before (had to use a long piece of pipe to break it) or just as tight as I can get it without the breaker? (the R-clip will hold it in place as well, and the nut should tighten itself when the wheel is moving, right?)

Whoa there! Your wheel is normal.

The rubber bits you to refer to are a cush drive - these bikes don't have them.

Can't help with the wheel nut size sorry, (a search will probably bring it up) I usually use a shifter too.
It doesn't need to be done up superhuman tight.


If you think you're missing any more parts in future it might be best to check the parts manual (rvf one in link below)!

Cammo, you are my hero. That parts manual will be saved on my desktop and be my first point of reference, as opposed to asking my stupid questions here

If I ever need a part, I can just ring a Honda dealer with those part numbers, and they can order them in, right? (The RVF doesn't come up on my local Honda dealer's computer because it's a grey import, but Honda part numbers worldwide are universal, aren't they?)

Yeah cush drive, that's the one. Didn't think it applied to my wheel, but then I thought the holes were weird as they didn't seem to sit anywhere on the hub (I didn't really look that closely though)..

PS: My rear tyre has about 15PSI of pressure in it at the moment, so it's really stuffed. There are heaps of rocks and stuff jammed in the tyre so I'll just go with new Dunlop GPRA-12's as I can get them pretty cheap

Yes you can, but there'll be a long wait if there are no parts stocked in Oz.

It's quicker to type the part number you're after into the David Silver Spares site in the UK. Postage price is ok on small items, not all pasrt available show up in a model search, search by part number.

Just pumped my wheel up to 32PSI and put it in a big tub of water, but I can't see any air bubbles coming out of anywhere. The valve looks ok too, no bubbles even when I bend it to the side.. Looks like it's sealed pretty well..

I'm going to take the tyre off tomorrow and check the inside of the tyre and check to see if there are any holes or cuts that have made it all the way through the tyre. If so, new GPRA-12's will be going on. If not, I'll replace the valve and see if that makes a difference...

wheel nut should be 36mm and i believe its an m18 x 1.50 pitch

just a quick noobie question here, my 29 got those cush drive. what's the function of it ?

The cush drive takes some of the stress and load off the final drive (chain and rear sprocket) when you get on the gas and/or change gears. The 30 and 35 don't have cush drive, so they can eat chains quicker.

thanks mate! no wonder how bad the condition of my cush drive! and it answered my final drive problem (ktak....ktak... sound) i guess...going to replace it soon.
