Gunk is ideal.Get the spray can from Halfords, spray it on generously, leave for five minutes, then wash with warm soapy water, and then rinse down with cold water

You can indeed. I get five litres of degreaser and do exactly that.
If it's really thick grime, like around the drive sprocket, scrape the thick of it off first.
For really hard to shift stuff I sometimes nick the wifes Mr Muscle oven cleaner, the sort that foams up. Leave it overnight then go back to it with some degreaser, a stiff toothbrush and scotch-bright.
When you've finished a light spray with some silicone will make it easier to clean next time. Soft seal on anything that could rust.

I use gunk in a cheap spray bottle, i dont use soapy water after as it starts pushing the dirt around the bike. I get a wrap of polishing cloth or some rags and keep spraying and wiping clean, hard to clean stuff use a brush, and small areas an old tooth brush.

Oh and use some gloves as you get bloody filthy!!
