Hello, I did a quick search without luck. i have a 94 VFR400- new to me. I don't have the owners manual. How do I know when the chain is at the proper adjustment? Right now the chain is right up to the gauards and feels tight. Also, can someone give me a quick tutorial on adjusting.

Put the bike on the side stand and measure the distance from the bottom part of the chain to the underside of the swingarm, roughly central between the two sprockets. The correct tension is about 15-25mm unladen play. More or less than this, the chain will need adjusting.

To adjust the chain slacken off the nut at the back of the swingarm, it holds the bracket guide for the rear brake line to the rear caliper. Once thats slack behind the sprocket is a castelated dial which turns clockwise and anti clockwise (tighten and loosen chain) Now in your Honda toolkit you should have a c spanner, if not you can use a brass drift or a screwdriver (try not to round the rises of the castellated dial if you a screwdriver) Just turn the dial so the chain is at the right tension and tighten the main nut up on the swingarm!

There is also a chain and sprocket guide on the swingarm, i think its Green and red, If its in the red you need a new chain and sprocket set. Its just behind the rear sprocket!

Digging up an old post. But on my NC35, if I push the chain upwards half way between the sprockets it contacts the plastic guard on the underside of the swing arm, but that it less than 25mm of play. Should it be able to touch that guard?

Can the chain touch the gaurd with someone sitting on the bike? There'll be less play with weight on the bike.
