Sounds like a bad earth or fried reg/rect to me - carbs won't make your lights dim/brighten.

i'd go with reg/rec too, these bikes suffer lots of regulator failures, dead battery is a common problem.
Full test / inspection of the charging system will take you about 45 minutes and help to nail your problems

Theres a link above that is a step by step guide to testing the full electrical system of the bike.
This is deffiantly worth it.
If your alteneators goosed and you replace the reg/rec and battery you'll find in a few days your new reg/rec and battery are both dead again.
For the extra 10 minutes i'd do that.

id never even used a multimeter before but after a few tutorials off youtube and a little reading it was a peice of piss..
check the connector block on the the right hand side of the bike first (right hand side while on the bike)
there is a cluster of electrical block connectors, one with the three yellow wires is running from your alternator then onto your reg/rec, this could be corroded and causing a problem with charging. it is also where you will need to check the power coming from the alternator.
